“Annus mirabilis”
2011 has certainly been, as another BBC
News article put it (rather more prosaically
than Brother Thomas), “The year when a lot
happened.” A conscious decision has
therefore been made to devote significant
space, in this the first 2012 issue of the
Testimony magazine, to a selection of the
events we have witnessed, that readers might
reflect on the nearness of our Lord’s
return.

A Goodly Heritage
Reflections on Christadelphian
faith, life and history
Reg Carr The title of this book is borrowed from
Psalm 16, where the Psalmist reflects on the privilege of
belonging to a community blessed by God over a number of
generations, and where he thanks God for the “goodly heritage”
he has been given — the blessings of a communal spiritual life
which he has inherited in the mercy and providence of God.
The aim of this book is to highlight and
examine some of the distinctive features — the “goodly heritage”
— of the Christadelphian community, in doctrine and practice, in
communal, spiritual and everyday life, and to show that the
Christadelphians’ claim to be a Bible–based community is a valid
one.

“These shall hate the whore, and shall
make her desolate”
Time to act is running out. A glorious
reward is in store for those who are willing
to sacrifice the ideology, morality,
materialism and luxury
offered to us by Babylon, and to embrace
instead a life of self-sacrifice with the
suffering people of God. Current events in
Europe are the clearest
possible indication to our generation of
where we are in God’s timescale, as clear as
was the regathering of the nation of Israel
to their land
in our parents’ generation. Whether our
response matches theirs is for us to
decide—but we do not have long to make up
our minds.

Special free background article:
The Harlot
Symbology and
figurative language are a feature of
both the Old and New Testament
writings. We usually associate this
use with those parts of Scripture
that we regard as prophetic, but
this is not exclusively so. As a
principle of exposition it is wise
to establish how symbols and figures
of speech are used in the earlier
parts of Scripture if we are to
understand their later usage. It is
on this basis, therefore, that the
subject of harlotry as presented in
the Old Testament is considered so
that we are in a position rightly to
expound its symbolic use in the book
of Revelation.

Moses: Earth's Meekest Man
John Mitchell
This is a delightfully written new book about a major Bible
character who prefigures in so many ways the Lord Jesus Christ
himself. Taking us with him on the lifetime’s journey which led
Moses from being a prince in Egypt to leading God’s people
Israel to the edge of the Promised Land, John Mitchell has once
again put his pen to much valuable use. Moses: Earth’s Meekest
Man provides many new and helpful insights into the dramatic and
highly significant life of one of God’s greatest servants, and
it brings us very close to the heart and mind of a great leader,
a man of selfless devotion who gave himself so humbly in service
to others.

For the study and defence of the Holy Scripture
Edward Whittaker
A glance through the list of the 130 or more
articles that Brother Edward Whittaker wrote for the
Testimony magazine over the years will show
quite clearly that his writings are of major
importance to Bible students and lovers of the
Truth. It is because of this that the Promoting
Committee commissioned this selection of articles in
1987, in the conviction that the Brotherhood will
benefit by having readily available in book form
some of the best writing produced by one of our
community's most able expositors.

Stormy Wind Fulfilling His Word
The place of weather, volcanoes
and earthquakes in fulfilling Bible Prophecy
This book is well reasoned and easy to follow. It will be of
interest to all, both young and old, who are today’s watchmen,
seeking to understand how God has worked in the past and continues
to work in the present to bring about His purpose. This book is also
a tribute to the author who, throughout his life, had many
interests: in archaeology, science, current affairs, history, nature
(especially bird-watching) and, of course, Bible exposition and
prophecy; and above all, in his brothers and sisters in Christ. May
we have the same keen interests that he did. We look forward to
seeing him again well and strong in the day of the resurrection and
the Kingdom.

Special Issue 2009
Preaching in the Modern World
It is hoped that this Special Issue can help us to speak
“openly to the world”. As the modern world becomes increasingly wicked and
perilous, may we openly preach the gospel to those around us, so that, when
we stand before our Master, we might ... say, “in secret have I said
nothing”'.
